Some of my favorite projects to work on are the adorable newborn photo props that are all the rage these days.

These are a few that I've made this past year.

I just had a request for a ladybug and can't wait to get started!

Are you a professional photographer?  Or do you have a friend that is?  I would love to make some photo props for you too.  Just contact me through the comments below or click my Etsy Shop button at the left of this page and let me know through email that way.  Looking forward to hearing from you.

Happy 1st Blogiversary!

I can't believe I've had my blog for a year now!

It all started with the opening of my Etsy Shop and they said you should start a blog.  What's a blog? I said.  And so started the journey of learning

  • which blog host to use ~ I picked Blogger.com because it seemed more user friendly
  • how to create a great looking blog ~ I spent many hours reading how to's and I'm still changing things
  • thinking of a catchy title ~ The title of my shop was taken so I used synonyms in the wording to alter it
  • what to blog about ~ first it was about the projects I completed and I just went from there
I am still learning of course but looking  back I sure am glad I started it.  It started off as a place to promote the products in my shop and has grown to include all the interests and discoveries in my life.

One of my great enjoyments in life is cooking. At least 4 nights a week I fix a homemade meal for my husband and me.  I have posted a few recipes complete with how to pictures on my blog but I want to make my meal planning a more permanent part of my blog.  So to kick off my second year here at Blogger I'm starting a Sunday Super series.  Every Sunday evening I will post my weekly meal plan complete with recipes. I'm kind of excited.  It's a big commitment but since I already do the planning it will just require putting my plans on the blog in an easy way for people to access it.

So with no further ado I introduce...

Fall in July

I hope everyone had a wonderful forth yesterday celebrating our country's 236th birthday. After finishing my American Chevron quilt I made a few bibs and burp cloths for my Etsy shop.

Then it was off to the fabric store for more stash.   I was thrilled to see that they had gotten in a mess of new fall fabrics! For crafters July always marks the time to start thinking of halloween costumes and Christmas gifts. I couldn't leave without purchasing a few things so decided to start this adorable spider web quilt.  I found the pattern at Moda Bake Shop and couldn't believe how easy it is!

That is as far as I got yesterday.  Can't wait to finish it!

American Chevron Quilt

Chevron quilts are so popular these days and I can see why.  They are so easy to make!  Here is my newest baby quilt for my Etsy Shop just in time for our country's 236th  birthday.

I got the pattern from Bee Square Blog here.

I did the back in this fun red, white and blue stripe and binded it in red using my new bias tape maker and quilted in the ditch.

Next I'd like to make bibs and burp cloths with the scraps.

Happy quilting and Happy 4th of July!

Cheater Quilt

This is a cheater quilt that I just finished for my Etsy shop.  A cheater quilt is a quilt with a top that does not have to be pieced together. The fabric used for the top of the quilt looks like it has been pieced together or appliqued, but is actually one large piece of printed fabric. Cheater is such an ugly word for such a beautiful thing.  Cheater quilts are a perfect project for new machine quilter or folks with little time for craftiness.  A cheater quilt allows you to skip the huge task of doing piecework on a quilt. All you have to do is quilt and bind.  I finished this quilt in about 2 hours.

Machine Quilting

I just got back from my first machine free motion quilting class.  I was so intimidated when I first thought of tackling this way of quilting.  When I saw my local quilt shop was offering a class on it I signed up thinking it would be much easier for me to learn from an expert than try to teach myself.  I was right.  My instructor was very patient and easy to understand.  She even helped me put my darning (free motion) foot on.

The book she used to help learn all those years ago is Diane Gaudynski’s book Guide to Maching Quilting and so I bought my own copy plus a few other things including more fabric.  I mean I was in a quilt store after all.

Here is some of the work I did today minus the simple shapes in the middle of each square.

With practice and patience I hope to feel comfortable enough to actual free motion quilt some of the baby quilts for my Etsy shop!

Just Hangin'

Is this not just the cutest fabric! It is an Alexander Henry Fabric called "just hanging"

My newest quilt for my shop started out as a traditional pinwheel quilt

until I went to the fabric store to find a backing fabric for it.  I knew I had to do something to show off these adorable critters.  It was my first attempt at setting blocks on point.

Next time I'll allow more seam allowence so as not to cut off the tips of the pinwheels in the middle.  But over all I love the way it turned out.

Commissioned Work

I was sitting in my chair letting Carol snip and cut my hair. Actually I was paying her to.  She has been my hair stylist for over a year now and I just love her.  I was sharing with her the fun I'm having with my little shop at Etsy.com and she asked if I did pillows?  I've never done a pillow before but I was pretty sure I could handle it until she said she wanted it to be personalize for her grand-daughter.  At first I didn't think I could because I don't have an embroidering machine but she was thinking more along the lines of appliqued letters.  I said I could totally do that and this is how it turned out.

A Trick to Remember Aperture

I finished another quilt for my Etsy Shop!  And so I decided to take it outside to take photographs of it.  Spring is such a nice time to take pictures. The green in all the plants is so vibrant and you usually can find a little color in the blooms around.  Irises are my favorite flower and here in Texas they are blooming everywhere!  So I stuck my quilt up on the fence and took a few pictures.

As I was going in I noticed my cat lounging among the flowers and thought how nice of him to pose for me for me like that.  I’m just learning the art of photography and the more I experiment with the functions on my camera the more fun it gets.  At the present I keep my camera setting on P (program mode) I’m learning about aperture (F-stop) because it’s what makes that one item in focus and all the rest blurry giving the subject that “popped-high definition” look.  The way I remember it is; the lower the F-stop number the fewer things in focus.  So I set my F-stop at 4.4 and got Merlin in focus and St. Francis blurred.
Meet Merlin

I've been told that if I use a telephoto lens, I'll get an even more dramatic effect. Can't wait to try that.

Complex Me

So I’m starting this blog as a place to put my thoughts and ideas about this wonderful, crazy, tragic, sometime almost magic, awful, beautiful life of mine.  The name of my blog comes from Psalm 139:14(New Living Translation) and it is so true as I’m sure you are too.  I am a very complex person.  For starters I have about a bazillion interests and want to pursue them all! Also I deeply feel a wide spectrum of emotions and act on them freely.  I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge which I attribute to my wise and intellectual father along with a desire for all things beautiful which I attribute to my elegant and very stylish mother.

I’ve recently opened a shop at Etsy.com as an outlet for one of my bazillion interests my love of sewing and needlework.  The items in my shop are handmade baby items and 10% of the proceeds go to Sound Options Pregnancy Center. I’ve limited my brand to just baby items with reasons that are connected back to how complex I am and how sometimes life can be tragic.  But more on that subject later.  For now let me just say people can choose to let this life make them bitter or better.   I choose better.
Lord thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous, how well I know it. Psalm 139:14
